It is no secret that, as we get older, we sometimes experience limitations which prevent us from fully participating in activities we used to be able to do before. Such is the case with my parents. My father is still in a longer than expected recovery mode after a knee surgery this past year, which has prevented him from tilling the large family garden plot. And my mom’s knees, while not requiring surgery at this time, do trouble her. This spring, mom started seed in several flats with the intention of getting the seedlings into the ground but, without a tilled garden, it just didn’t happen. Suddenly she was faced with trying to find a home for her vegetable plants.

Around this time, Woolly Pockets had invited me to try out their Meadow Raised Garden Bed (what fortuitous timing!) and so I promptly delivered the product to my parents’ home and assisted with the set-up and planting. With a 9″ H x 48 x 48″ footprint and a soil volume of 12.0 cu ft., mom would be able to plant several of her plants. And plant several she did (perhaps a bit too many – “Watch the spacing mom!”) – specifically, a variety of tomatoes, peppers and broccoli.

Putting together the Meadow Raised Garden Bed was as easy as slipping some straight and L-shaped metal rods together and attaching them with Velcro straps to the interior of the soft-sided fabric frame for support. And there you have it, an instant raised garden bed! No tools required! Mom set the raised garden bed up on a platform about hip high so she wouldn’t have to bend over for her plant caretaker duties. That’s the beauty of the Meadow Raised Garden Bed – being able to place it anywhere according to your needs. You can even get a raised garden bed in a size configuration that’s right for the space and type of planting you have in mind. Woolly Pocket offers the Meadow in 3 different sizes, which you can buy multiples of and sidle together to create a modular design:

  • Lil Meadow (ARV $90): 9″³ H x 24 x 24″³ Footprint, Soil Volume = 3.0 cu. ft.
  • Meadow (ARV $200): 9″³ H x 48x 48″³ Footprint, Soil Volume = 12.0 cu. ft.
  • Deep Meadow (ARV $250): 18″ H x 48 x 48″ Soil Volume: 24.0 cu. ft.

The color of our Meadow Raised Garden Bed was a pretty blue referred to as ‘peacock’ and it certainly did strut its stuff in mom’s backyard with its bright eye-popping color. However, if you’re looking for more subtle colors, Woolly Pocket does offer other color choices including chocolate, black, and clover green.

One thing I noticed immediately during set-up was the lack of visible drainage holes which went against my gardening grain, as I had always been told that drainage in containers and raised garden beds was an absolute. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. The Meadow, which is made in the USA from 100% recycled materials, features an ingenious product design due to breathable sides that allow soil to aerate naturally and release excess moisture.

Sustainable, breathable, modular and sleek, the Meadow Raised Garden Bed seems to have it all!
