Growing flowers is a reward in itself: seeing the blooms come in, enjoying the fragrances, cutting fresh flowers for indoors, and just being surrounded by beautiful flowers in your outdoor space. But have you considered other creative uses for the flowers you grow? Fresh flowers for hair make beautiful hair decorations, particularly for special occasions. Here are some of the best flowers to tuck into hair, casually in a ponytail or weaved into more complex updos for weddings, garden parties or just for fun.

  1. Daisy. Who hasn’t used daisy flowers to tuck into hair at least once? A classic white daisy with a yellow center is evocative of innocence and childhood. This is a great option for summer and for little girls. Make a daisy chain to wear like a crown for a hippie look.
  2. Chrysanthemum. Mums are great for hairstyles because they come in a variety of colors and are sturdy. For something really eye-catching, try a Fuji mum with its spiky, long petals.
  3. Gardenia. Go with gardenia when choosing flowers for hair that will be attention getting. This large, pretty flower has one of the most intoxicating smells.
  4. Freesia. For smaller budgets, try freesia. They resemble lilies, come in a few different colors, and are widely available and inexpensive.
  5. Rose. This is a classic flower that evokes romance. Perfect for weddings, try a spray rose, which is a little smaller than many other rose varieties
  6. Baby’s breath. This is a wedding staple that adds texture and visual interest with its tiny white buds. You can use baby’s breath alone or as part of a hair arrangement.
  7. Anemone. Truly striking is a white anemone with a dark blue center. If you’re going for an exotic, unique look, this is your flower.
  8. Lily. Any kind of lily, from a bright orange daylily to an elegant white calla lily, is a great flower for a hairstyle that requires just one, prominent bloom.
  9. Feverfew. Raid your herb garden for a cluster of these small, daisy-like flowers. Feverfew blooms offer a more rustic, natural look for an updo or a flower crown.
  10. Greenery. Don’t forget the greens. A little bit of foliage tucked into an updo next to a colorful flower will really set it off. Choose any kind of greenery you like and that looks good with your chosen blooms.

To help keep flowers fresh for a party, keep them in the refrigerator right up until the time you’re ready to put them in your hair. Use any hairspray or other products first, and then add the flowers, as they can damage the blooms. There are many flowers to wear in your hair and many ways to wear flowers in an updo. Choose the ones that you like best.
