Plants can really jazz up dark corners in your home, but figuring out exactly what indoor plants are suitable for low light conditions can be a real challenge. If light is so dim that reading a newspaper is difficult, consider the area low light. This may be a room with north-facing windows, or where windows are shaded by trees. Even a large, bright room with plenty of windows might be low light in the center. Keep in mind that lighting conditions change with the seasons. A west-facing window that gets intense light during the summer might receive low light during the winter months.

Here are five of our all-time favorite low-light plants:

1. Snake plant (Sansevieria) – Often known as mother-in-law tongue, this is a striking plant with strappy, sword-shaped leaves. Snake plant is available in various colors, including solid green foliage or leaves with yellow edges or splotches.

2. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) – This tall, distinctive plant shows off glossy, deep green leaves. It’s also one of the few indoor plants that actually produces flowers in low light conditions. Peace lily is an adaptable plant that also thrives in moderate and bright light.

3. Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) – The Chinese evergreen plant displays deep or pale green, sword-like leaves with pale gray or silvery splotches. This all-purpose, highly decorative plant tolerates very low light conditions, but is also adaptable to moderate or bright light.

4. ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) – ZZ plant is a low-maintenance plant that works well for people who tend to forget about regular plant care. This striking, slow-growing plant does well in low light, and it’s a popular office plant because it does so well under fluorescent lights.

5. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) – Often known as airplane plant for the baby plantlets that develop on runners extending from the leaves, the spider plant is a popular houseplant. Hanging baskets are perfect for this low-maintenance plant, but it also works well in a tabletop container.
