Hummingbirds are a great bunch of guys to have in your garden. They’re beautiful, they’re fascinating to watch, and they’re excellent pollinators. Plenty of people want them around so badly that they buy special hummingbird feeders to attract them. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but why not spread your hummingbird attraction across your whole garden with plants that produce the big, striking flowers that they love.

Here are our top 5 plants for hummingbirds:

1. Honeysuckle – Very tough and fast growing, honeysuckle is a great plant for creating living screens to cover fences or walls. Their flowers give off an amazing scent in the spring and are an absolute magnet for hummingbirds. Take care to plant only species that are native to your area, as some varieties of honeysuckle are extremely invasive.

2. Trumpet vine
– Another tough, prolific vine, this one will give you uncountable tubular orange flowers that hummingbirds love. Make sure to prune trumpet vine and cut back suckers regularly, though, as it spreads easily and can get out of hand.

3. Fuchsia
– A very popular hanging basket plant that’ll bring hummingbirds right up onto your porch, fuchsia is a must have. Think of it as a hummingbird feeder with a tropical flair (that you have to water).

4. Bee balm – You might think that it only attracts bees, but the name actually comes from a traditional salve used to soothe bee stings. While bees do like it, it’s hummingbirds that really go crazy for bee balm with bright flowers.

5. Azalea – A big shrub that’s absolutely teeming with flowers, the azalea is an easy to grow, very effective beacon to hummingbirds. It comes in a huge range of varieties, meaning you should be able to find the perfect one no matter what climate you live in. Though it’s thought of as a shrub, some varieties can grow as tall as 20 feet.
